FUNDAMENTALS ON OUR VEDIC RESEARCH

The Vedas are timeless. They transcend religion and beliefs. They encompass immense knowledge and wisdom. Traditionally it has been taught that listening to Vedic mantras, permeates and nurtures the mind and soul.

Vedas, time immemorial, have been the subject matter of mysticism. It is supposed to originate from the Swasa of Parabramha. The ancient Ascetics, who did meditation (Thapas), were able to attenuate to receive the Vedas. Vedas, when arrived to the earthlings, was in the form of shruti and it was transmitted orally from generation to generation. The importance of this transmission was the preservation of its aksharas in the mantras when it was expounded. The Vedas and Upanishads traditionally have been thought to precede human existence and will exist in perpetuity.

Prakruthi and Vikurthi
Prakruthi is plain chanting of Vedas and has been practiced in three forms. Vikurthi has been practiced in eight forms.

The script for the Vedas was originally in the Braahmi form and subsequent development of Devanagiri Lipi. The Westerners have done more work on the Vedic literature than the work undertaken in our own country. It is learnt there are around 1300 Shakas (branches of Vedas) and it is only around 100 or so is available to us. It is also observed that four Vedas – Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharvana – were received in this order and it is Vedavyasa who organized the tenets of these Vedas and gave it a shape as to which belongs to what. Since Vedas happen to be vast in nature, he could foresee that it was humanly impossible for one single human being to have the mastery over all the Vedas and hence he arranged the Vedas in such a fashion that a branch can be preserved by a Sect.

The recitation of Vedas can be by different annotation. Vedas are chanted in a predetermined swaras in different forms.

Listening to the mantras has the intrinsic value of stimulating both the used and unused cells of the brain. The Vedas are the secret weapon in our quest for improving our mind. The mantras of the Vedas are like water and nutrients added to the soil of the brain to help it nurture the seed of thought. The mind can work at optimum capacity only when it is at peace. The mantras allow our brain cells to vibrate at the same frequency and therefore provide the mind with the most conducive environment for growth.
It has been accepted worldwide that listening to Vedic chants for a longer period of time leads to a state where the ordinary thinking process settles down and a distinctive psycho physiological state of “restful alertness” is gained. This state is characterized by decreased respiration, skin conductance level and decreased plasma lactate. The directed meditation reduces the sympathetic activity and regulates adrenal in and non adrenalin secretion. On the other hand it also increases frontal alpha coherence and cerebral blood flow.
